Collagraphs with Carl Borges
14 - 18 July 2008

Collagraph blocks exploit many types of materials, textures and mark-making techniques. Particularly effective for their rich tonal effects, the blocks can be printed intaglio like an etching or treated as a relief print. During the course students will be able to make several blocks, experiment with colour through viscosity printing and use chine collé techniques.
Carl Borges is a member of and regular tutor at Gainsborough's House Print Workshop and belongs to printmaking group 12PM. His beautifully detailed lino-cuts, which are regularly exhibited around
East Anglia, reflect his interest in nature and the people and places that surround him. Carl is currently working with collagraphs and brings a new and expert approach to this exciting medium, exploring both relief and intaglio printmaking methods.

Lithography with Colin Gale
28 July - 1 August 2008

Lithography is probably the closest printmaking technique to painting and drawing in terms of its mark-making and directness. The materials used and their application in lithography will have a very familiar feel to any artist. The course offers students the opportunity to work on stone, zinc plate and aluminium photo plate. The technique is taught in easy to follow stages on a one to one basis closely related to each student’s aims. Students will have the opportunity to work on several images in both black and white and colour, realising their own ideas based on sketches, studies and/or photographs. For those who love drawing, working on a stone is a must-have experience!
Colin Gale founded and now directs the Artichoke Print Workshop, London’s leading open-access facility for Fine Art printmaking. Colin’s expertise is widely recognised and has resulted in many printmaking projects with artists including Tom Philips, Gary Hume and Terry Frost. As well as creating and exhibiting his own prints, Colin is a visiting lecturer at UCL, London College of Printing and Camberwell College of Art amongst others.

Print Workshop Courses

Urban<>Rural Prints with Nicholette Goff
4 - 8 August 2008

This workshop introduces a most unusual direct printing technique, using only the natural colour and texture of plants and found objects; no inks or other pigments are used. The process is clean, sensitive and inspiring, and produces delicate and beautiful prints. During the workshop two days will be spent developing techniques and processes in the studio. Then the water meadows and local streets will provide source material and the group will work on pieces that 'map' the colour and texture of Sudbury's land and town environments.

Nicholette Goff's work is based in the natural environment - woodlands, gardens, parks and nature reserves where she prints directly from the ground using her car as a printing press. The resulting prints, metres wide, are impregnated with the essence and texture of the plant material on the ground.

Contemporary Woodcuts with Mark Hudson
11 August - 15 August 2008

Using redwood faced ply and process inks mixed with extender, this course encourages innovation, colour experiment and enjoyment. Cutting, chiselling, abrading and taking advantage of the natural qualities of surfaces mean results can be achieved quickly and reduction prints are of particular interest. In this process a direct approach is often an advantage. Beginners and the more experienced are welcome and larger scale work can be happily accomodated.

Mark Hudson studied at Camberwell School of Art and St. Martins. He has a thriving London illustration practice as well as producing his woodcut prints and he also lectures. You can see Mark’s graphic and illustrative work on www.markhudson.net and his prints have been acquired by both the National Art Library and private collectors.

Printmaking in the English Tradition (3 Day)
with Peter Brown
23 - 25 August 2008

'In the English Tradition' refers to the preference of British wildlife and figurative artists, from Berwick to Bawden, for relief printmaking as a means of expressing the world around them. Using their own drawings, students will have the opportunity to explore the qualities of lino, woodcut and wood-engraving, and to produce prints using both press and hand burnishing. Emphasis will be placed on black and white and the relationship between them in a composition.
Peter Brown gained a post-graduate diploma in illustration from St Martin's and learned printmaking at Morley College. He has worked as an illustrator since 1991. During the past 11 years, he has produced weekly natural history illustrations for The Times newspaper and illustrated the books 'How to Attract Birds to your Garden' and 'Nature Notes' (both by
Derwent May). He has exhibited with the Society of Wood Engravers and the Society of Wildlife Artists.

Screenprinting II with Michael Carlo
1 - 5 September 2008

Screenprinting involves pushing ink through a stencil prepared on a fine-mesh fabric. It is one of the most versatile printmaking techniques, particularly for colour work. This course offers a complete introduction to the medium, covering the production of hand-drawn stencils. A painterly approach is emphasised and original drawings are welcomed. Like many other studios, Gainsborough’s House now uses only water based acrylic inks, eliminating the unpleasant and hazardous fumes produced by solvents.
Michael Carlo has taught highly successful courses in screenprinting for several years. Educated at the Royal College of Art, he grew up in Sudbury and his own prints focus on the landscape around his home in Suffolk. Michael’s enthusiasm for working directly onto screens leads to very free and direct imagery in his printmaking.

In addition to paintings by Camden Town artists, such as Bevan, Walter Sickert and Spencer Gore, the collection included works by Gaugin, Mark Gertler and others.

The exhibition has been organised by the National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh. A book to accompany the exhibition will be published.
